ATM Cell MultiplexerThis ATM Cell Multiplexer connects four physical layer UTOPIA Level 1 or eight physical (PHY) layer UTOPIA Level 2 devices to a single ATM layer UTOPIA Level 2 device. The next sentence needs to be rewritten based on different UTOPIA handshaking signals for ATM-physical devices. The transmit side accepts incoming cells from an ATM layer device, along with an encoded cell priority on external pins. By reading the cells destination port from the VPI field and the cells priority from external pins, the transmit side places the cell in the appropriate queue. The queues are maintained in an external 16-bit wide RAM using a linked list with head and tail pointers. Each priority maintains a maximum cell count and is considered full when the number of cells in that priority exceeds a programmable threshold. The buffers are dynamically allocated among the output devices on a first-come, first-serve basis.
